Drysdale toppled at Henley Royal Regatta

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 3/07/2016

Mahe Drysdale © Getty Mahe Drysdale Olympic champion Mahe Drysdale has suffered a surprise loss in the single sculls final at the Henley Royal Regatta in England.

The New Zealand great was upset by Belgian Hannes Obreno in the final of the Diamond Challenge Sculls, falling behind early on the Thames River course and losing by two lengths.

Racing into a headwind, 37-year-old Drysdale couldn't catch his Rio-bound rival, who is 12 years younger and gave away 15kg in weight.

The result denies Drysdale a sixth win at the 177-year-old regatta at Henley-on-Thames, which would have lifted him level with the record held by Australian Stuart Mackenzie.

He was more convincing in his three earlier races, including victory by more than three lengths in the semi-final against Danish sculler Sverri Sandberg Neilsen.
