Duncan retains motocross world series lead

Two consistent races in Italy have kept Kiwi rider Courtney Duncan on top in the women's motocross world championship series.

Duncan placed second and third on a rock-hard track at Pietramurata in Trentino, retaining a narrow overall lead over fellow Yamaha rider Kiara Fontanesi through two rounds.

Italian Fontanesi won her home round, notching a win and a second place.

Duncan led both races at different times but couldn't hold on to top spot in what proved to be challenging conditions.

The 21-year-old from Dunedin leads the series courtesy of her opening round win in Indonesia in March.

She was also out front last year until a freak accident when she rode into a trackside photographer in a race in Germany.

A hand injury ruled her out of the final two events, ending her title hopes.

The third of six rounds is in France on May 28.
