Dunedin landfill fire contained

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 17/04/2016

Firefighters have managed to contain a landfill blaze in Dunedin that prompted warnings for nearby residents to stay inside.

Fire crews were on Monday morning still dampening down the site at the Green Island Landfill on Brighton Road after battling to contain the fire from 3am.

Diggers were being used to break up the pile to remove the clay surface.

Residents were earlier warned to keep their windows and doors closed, particularly those with respiratory problems, but Dunedin City Council group manager Laura McElhone said the blaze no longer posed a risk.

"There has been no smoke since around 8am and therefore no longer any smoke risk to residents in the area," she said.

Dr McElhone said the fire had been on the tip of the pile, away from ignitable sources.

The landfill has now reopened and rubbish collections are continuing as normal.
