A man killed in a light plane crash in Otago has been named as a local retired businessman.

Dunedin resident Murray Barrington, 73, was killed in the single-engine aircraft crash at Welshman's Creek, north-east of Middlemarch, on Sunday, police say.

A second person onboard was seriously injured.

According to a report in the Otago Daily Times, Ms Barrington - a retired businessman and trainee pilot - donated $60,000 to the Otago Aero Club to restore its 80-year-old hangar in 2015.

Investigators were expected to travel to the crash site on Monday afternoon.

The aircraft left Taieri on Sunday morning but never arrived at its destination in Omarama.
