Dutch claim hockey series against NZ

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 23/06/2016

Blair Tarrant couldn't celebrate his 150th appearance for the Black Sticks with a win after they were beaten 2-0 by the Netherlands in Groningen.

Constantijn Jonker scored goals in each half to seal the three-match series for the world's No.2-ranked side after the hosts won the opening game 1-0.

Jonker put the Dutch ahead in the fourth minute and doubled their tally after 55 minutes.

The Black Sticks' inability to score for the second match running was an issue for coach Colin Batch.

"We had four corners to their two, so we had a lot of possession in patches but couldn't break through a strong Dutch defence," he said.

"We are creating lots of chances. They're not easy chances but we need to take a step forward and learn how to convert them and score goals in these close matches."

The final match of the three-game series is on Saturday (NZT).

The Black Sticks then head to Spain for a six-nation tournament in Valencia.
