Dutch speed derails Football Ferns

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 7/04/2016

New Zealand have been undone by speed in suffering a 2-0 loss to the Netherlands in a women's international friendly near Amsterdam.

The Football Ferns conceded both goals early in the game to right winger Shanice van de Sanden, one of several Dutch players who troubled the visitors with her pace.

The goals came in the eighth and 17th minutes before New Zealand found their feet, creating their share of chances but lacking a clinical finish.

An experienced New Zealand team failed to avenge the result from the previous time they played the Netherlands, when they lost their pool game 1-0 at the women's World Cup in Canada last year.

World No.16 New Zealand are preparing for their Olympic Games tilt, while the 13th-ranked Dutch, who missed qualifying for Rio, are building for their hosting of next year's European championship.

Both teams shared a minute's silence before kick-off for Dutch legend Johan Cruyff, who died last month.
