Dyers Pass Road re-opens with restrictions

A key route over Christchurch's Port Hills is re-opening but rubberneckers are not wanted.

Dyers Pass Road through to Governors Bay is reopening to traffic on Saturday from 6am to 7pm.

There is no vehicle parking on the road, including the carpark at Sign of the Kiwi, and no public access to either side of Summit Road from Dyers Pass Road. This area remains within the operational fire zone and as such access is restricted.

Members of the public are being discouraged from driving up the road just to have a look at the devastation.

"There will be a lot of interest from the public wanting to view the damage to Dyers Pass Road over the weekend but we are asking that people refrain from coming up, leaving this road free for commuter traffic and fire operations crew," officials say.

A 50km/h speed zone is in place from Victoria Park to the Sign of the Kiwi.
