Early Open tee times for Lee and Alker

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 11/07/2016

New Zealand's two golfers at the Open Championship will need to make sure their alarm clocks are functioning ahead of the first round at Royal Troon Golf Club.

Veteran Steven Alker has been drawn in the second group away on Thursday, teeing off at 6.46am local time.

Kiwi No.1 Danny Lee follows soon afterwards, in the fifth group from 7.19am at the seaside links course, on Scotland's west coast.

World No.538 Alker, who qualified for his fourth Open three weeks ago, will play alongside 86th-ranked Australian Marcus Fraser and 346th-ranked Korean Sanghee Lee.

Lee's partners for the year's third major are 54th-ranked American Harris English and 128th-ranked Scotsman Richie Ramsay.

Lee is coming off a third placing at the Scottish Open at Aberdeen, which lifted his world ranking eight places to 40th, closing in on his career-best 34th.

His performance also raised $US8500 ($NZ11,655) towards the relief effort in West Virginia, which has been ravaged by flooding.

Floods meant Lee couldn't defend his title at cancelled PGA Tour event the Greenbrier Classic.

He pledged to raise money for those affected, offering $US500 for every birdie made in Aberdeen, which tallied 17.
