Early World Cup bronze for NZ rowers

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 29/05/2016

Zoe McBride has earned an early bronze for New Zealand at the rowing World Cup in Switzerland in the women's lightweight singles.

All nine New Zealand Olympic crews racing at the Lucerne regatta have now secured spots in the A finals late on Sunday (NZT).

McBride trailed off the pace in third place early in her final, German Anja Noske and Aja Holmegaard Runge of Denmark leading the way.

She battled back into second, but faded in the closing stages to come away with bronze.

"It was a tough race today, it sets the benchmark for the season," McBride said afterwards.

Defending Olympic champion Mahe Drysdale had to fight hard in his single sculls semi-final after Frenchman Tibaut Verhoeven's strong start gave him the early lead.

Second at the halfway mark, Drysdale built momentum over the second 1000m to grab a solid 6min 55.210sec win over second-placed Mindaugas Griskonis (Lithuania) in 6:55.920 and Dutchman Stefan Broenink (6:57.540).
