A temporary programme will help councils employ people to support the clean-up after the devastating Kaikoura earthquake.

Enhanced Taskforce Green will received $500,000 initial funding to cover the wages of workers and supervisors in quake affected areas, Social Development Minister Anne Tolley said.

Funding will also help hire or purchase personal safety or light equipment and hire transport for crews.

"Local people will know where best to target this extra support as they recover from the effects of the earthquake," Mrs Tolley said.

"Beneficiaries in the area will be able to help in cleaning debris and repairing damaged property and the local infrastructure."

Mrs Tolley said the MSD would monitor needs and report back if additional support was required.
