NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 10/06/2017

There are reports a "noisy" 4.1 magnitude earthquake has rattled windows and jolted Canterbury overnight.

GeoNet reported on its Facebook page that shaking was felt in a number of places, including Arthur's Pass, Kaiapoi, Geraldine, Methven, Cheviot and Oxford, at 10.38pm on Saturday.

It had a depth of 21km and was centred 15km west of Christchurch.

Marissa Kelly said the earthquake was "very sharp" at her house in Shirley, while Sue McManus said, "it was a good jolt, rattled and noisy in Sockburn".

Others reported it was like a loud bang, as if a train had rumbled past.
