The main highway north of Gisborne has been reopened but officials are warning motorists to be careful in wet conditions.

State Highway 35 at Goldsmiths Hill, just north of Ruatoria, was closed by a slip on Monday night but was opened to one lane on Tuesday morning.

The New Zealand Transport Agency says it will be under stop/go management for at least the next two days.

There were also slips and road subsidance elsewhere on the highway which contractors were working on.

"The Gisborne area has experienced a large amount of rain, and the forecast is for the rain to continue through to Friday," said highway manager Wayne Oldfield.

Most of the issues were on SH35 north of Gisborne but there were no problems with SH2, he said.

"Our contactors are out on roads making sites secures with temporary traffic management and are beginning repairs where possible."

Motorists should take extra care, drive to the conditions and check beforehand weather conditions and if the road was open, he said.

The MetService has warned heavy rain was expected in the hills and ranges around Gisborne, especially north of Tolaga Bay.
