ECE demonstration outside parliament

A demonstration organised by the primary teachers union NZEI has been staged outside parliament to demand increased funding for early childhood education, and higher quality.

About 100 adults and children turned up on Thursday as part of NZEI's Every Child is Worth it campaign.

They listened to Green Party MP Catherine Delahunty berate the government.

"Everything this government has done has driven down the quality of ECE, at the same time as it has been forcing more and more children to participate," she said.

"Early childhood education is relied upon by many families and those families should be able to trust that their kids are being properly educated and looked after."

The government has increased funding for ECE and says that since 2000 attendance has increased from 90 per cent to 96.2 per cent.

The Education Ministry says New Zealand is ranked in the top third of OECD countries for ECE participation.
