Ed Balls eyeballs Peters' 'Ed Balls'

Winston Peters' apparent tweet gaffe has been retweeted by the man that pioneered the high-profile mishap, British politician Ed Balls.

The NZ First leader hit the headlines on Saturday when his Twitter profile published "Tweets on Winston Peters NZ politician", the 72-year-old, who has been in parliament since 1978, seemingly making public what he may have been searching for.

Hours later, Mr Balls spotted the blunder and retweeted it.

With his 246,000 followers, Mr Balls' reference got more likes and retweets than Mr Peters' original.

In 2011, then Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer Mr Balls mistakenly typed his own name into the "compose tweet" box when searching for an article on himself. He hit send and sent the twittersphere into hysterics with the result.

The April 28 anniversary is now marked as "Ed Balls Day". It is too early to say if there will be a similar "Winston Peters Day".
