An elderly couple in Hastings have been woken by an intruder who broke into their home through a window.

A teenager broke into their home in Longlands Road shortly after 8am on Sunday and confronted the couple aged in their 70s, Detective John Brans of Hawke's Bay CIB says.

He assaulted the elderly man and drove off in dark-coloured sedan.

The man was treated for minor injuries and his wife was not injured.

The couple have been supported by family and victim support after what was a traumatic incident, Det Brans says.

Police want to hear from anyone who saw a man in his late teens acting suspiciously in or around the Longlands Road on Sunday between 7am and 8.30am.
