An elderly man is in a critical condition after he was stabbed in his home in the Southland town of Mataura.

Around 10pm on Saturday a man entered the Main Street house and demanded money, police say.

The victim was stabbed in the chest when he said he didn't have any cash.

He was taken to Southland Hospital where he is in a critical but stable condition.

The offender fled towards the railway station, Sergeant Scott MacKenzie says.

He was described as being average height and build, and was wearing a grey hoodie and dark pants.
