A 91-year-old woman has been assaulted during a home invasion in Auckland on Monday afternoon.

Police are looking for two men who allegedly fled the scene, on Mountain Road in Mt Wellington, after pushing the elderly woman over and stealing her purse.

The woman arrived home from shopping with her daughter, when two men knocked on the door claiming they were lost.

One of the men is described as 25 to 30 years-old, and a fair-skinned Maori or Pacific Islander of average build, approximately 180-183cms tall.

He was accompanied by another man approximately 15-19-years-old, also a fair-skinned Maori or Pacific Islander and was wearing a tan-coloured hoodie.

Police believe they were driving a metallic blue sedan with a loud exhaust, similarly shaped to a Nissan Skyline.

The woman suffered a suspected head injury and was in hospital overnight.

"This is a deplorable attack on a vulnerable person. Our elderly have the right to feel safe in their own homes without the fear of something like this happening," said Detective Senior Sergeant Glenn Baldwin.
