Election hack hard to imagine: English

Hacking is possible during this year's general election, but Prime Minister Bill English says he can't see why anyone would want to.

Responding to claims Russia influenced the US election outcome, Mr English admitted it's possible hackers might try to do the same in New Zealand.

"Just why someone would want to interfere with our elections would be hard to imagine," he told NewsHub while travelling in Europe on his first overseas trip as prime minister.

Mr English admitted he doesn't know if Russia spies on New Zealand but doesn't believe the fact New Zealand is part of the Five Eyes spy alliance, along with the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Canada, is a risk.

"One of New Zealand's benefits is because we're a long way away and fairly small we don't attract too much attention," Mr English said.

The prime minister is yet to set a date for this year's election, but it's expected to take place in the second half of the year.
