Electric limo tested for Crown's VIP fleet

An electric limousine is being trialled to see if electric vehicles could serve as Crown cars in the near future.

The Department of Internal Affairs says a free trial of the BMW 740Le xDrive Plug-In Hybrid vehicle has been offered as part of the existing contract with the car maker.

VIP Transport manager Steve Dyhrberg says the model is virtually identical to the existing fleet of BMW limousines.

He says the vehicle could offer real cost savings, as well as environmental benefits, because of its ability to travel solely on electric power.

It will be tested at different locations around the country over the next three to six months.

Mr Dyhrberg says the trial supports the Government's programme to double the numbers of electric vehicles in New Zealand every year to reach approximately 64,000 by the end of 2021.
