A China Southern airline flight has been forced to return to Auckland Airport and make an emergency landing after reporting engine problems.

The Boeing 787, with 212 people aboard, landed without incident just after 11.30am on Saturday, around 90 minutes after it took off, an airport spokesman says.

Flight CZ366 was bound for Guangzhou, near Hong Kong, a flight of 11 and a half hours.

The aircraft was berthed at the terminal with passengers still on board. The airline was yet to update the airport with what would happen next, the spokesman said.
