The Energy Star label comes from the United States' Environmental Protection Agency and is licenced locally by the government's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority.

However, EECA efficient products manager Eddie Thompson says the star label is no longer necessary because New Zealand regulations have now stopped the worst performing products from being sold.

He says a recent review shows consumers prefer using the Energy Rating Label, which lets them compare the running cost of appliances.

EECA is also developing an online tool that will give people information about New Zealand's most energy efficient products, Mr Thompson says.
