Prime Minister Bill English has met with his Singaporean counterpart during a stopover on his way home after a series of high-level meetings in Europe.

Mr English and his wife Mary had dinner with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Tuesday night during a brief stopover.

It was the first meeting for the pair since Mr English succeeded John Key as prime minister in December.

Mr Lee last met with Mr Key at the East Asia Summit in Laos last September.

Mr English tweeted pictures of the pair's dinner.

The meeting was the latest sit down for the prime minister on his first overseas trip in the top job.

During a little over a week-long tour of Europe he met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister Theresa May and Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel to discuss free trade, Brexit and the refugee crisis.

Free trade agreements with the European Union were the major topic of discussion when he sat down with European Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

It's hoped formal negotiations will begin this year with a chance of an agreement being in place in the next two to three years.
