Finance Minister Bill English will soon be on his way to Washington for the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

He leaves on Monday and says he'll use the meetings to assess the international financial situation.

"New Zealand is in the relatively unusual position of having a growing economy, sound government books, growing job numbers and rising real wages at the same time as low inflationary pressures, but we can't afford to take this state of affairs for granted," he said.

"The meetings will provide me with a valuable opportunity to discuss issues of economic interest to New Zealand with representatives of other governments."

While he's in Washington Mr English will also meet international ratings agencies to discuss New Zealand's economy and the international outlook.
