Six months out from the election a new poll has revealed Prime Minister Bill English is struggling to achieve the same popularity as his predecessor.

The Newshub-Reid Research poll released on Tuesday found Mr English was on 25 per cent as preferred prime minister.

By comparison, in August last year John Key achieved his worst poll result of 36.7 per cent, after consistently achieving figures above 40 per cent.

The poll has a margin of error of 3.1 per cent.

A thousand people were polled, including online respondents for the first time.

A quarter of respondents took part online, while the remainder received the traditional phone call.

Further results, to be released later on Tuesday, are expected to compare the popularity of Mr English and Labour leader Andrew Little.
