Prime Minister Bill English raised the sensitive issue of the South China Sea with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang during their talks in Wellington.

China claims a chain of islands in the South China Sea and is developing them, while seven other nations dispute its right to do that.

Mr English confirmed after the talks on Monday that he had raised the thorny issue, and gave a diplomatic response to questions from the media.

"Our position remains unchanged - we expect any difference of view to be resolved through the application of international rules," he said.

"We know it is a sensitive issue between New Zealand and China, and we don't think it will have an impact on the rest of the relationship."
