Prime Minister Bill English will announce his cabinet on Sunday and ministers will be sworn in on Tuesday.

He revealed the timeline to reporters on Tuesday, saying he would inform MPs of his appointments by phone before the announcement.

Mr English discussed the reshuffle within National's caucus at a meeting on Tuesday, and he's expected to make room for newcomers.

"They're ambitious and talented. We've got more people available than jobs and that's great," Mr English said heading into the meeting.

Police and Corrections Minister Judith Collins said she's not yet heard from Mr English about her future in cabinet ahead of the caucus meeting.

"I'm expecting to be told what's happening very soon," she said on Tuesday morning.

"I'm always happy with whatever I'm given but I must say I love police and corrections. I've loved every portfolio I've had."

The only certainty so far is for Steven Joyce who will replace Mr English as finance minister.

He has also defended Housing Minister Nick Smith against suggestions of incompetency, saying he'd done a good job on a complex issue.

Mr English's job has been made easier by Local Government Minister Sam Lotu-Iiga's announcement on Tuesday that he won't seek re-election and will give up his portfolios.
