New Zealand shares a special bond with Timor-Leste, Prime Minister Bill English says ahead of a meeting with the nation's leader.

Prime Minsiter Rui Araujo is due to arrive in Auckland on Tuesday for meetings with Mr English on trade, business and international relations.

Mr English says New Zealand has supported the nation for almost two decades, since Timor-Leste sought independence from Indonesia in 1999.

"More than 4000 New Zealand Defence Force, police and other personnel have served there in the past 18 years," he said

"The relationship with New Zealand is now evolving as Timor-Leste's economy and society grows and develops."

Dr Araujo will also visit Otago University, where he was a student in the late 1990s, and the new Zealand Police Training College.

Timor-Leste Foreign Affairs Minister Hernani Coelho will meet with NZ Foreign Minister Murray McCully while Interior Minister Longuinhos Monteiro will meet with senior police.
