EQC to slash staff

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 10/08/2016

With its work following the Canterbury earthquakes winding down, the Earthquake Commission will shed nearly 500 jobs by next year.

The government's natural disaster support agency employs 868 people but says it will only need 383 from January next year.

EQC is entering a new phase as it settles the claims from the 2010 and deadly 2011 quakes, says chief executive Ian Simpson.

"The level of work left is of a much smaller scale than the Canterbury Home Repair Programme was designed for. We need a smaller, fit-for-purpose approach to finish the work."

Staff had been made aware of the situation earlier this year.
