Kiwi No.1 Marina Erakovic has bowed out in the opening round of the French Open, losing in straight sets to American Shelby Rogers.

Despite leading 4-2 in the first set and 4-1 in the tiebreaker, Erakovic was unable to close and went down 7-6(4), 6-4 to her 49th-ranked opponent.

Erakovic has yet to win a tour-level match this year and her rank is now expected to drop to below 150, down from her 2012 high of 39th.

"It was a tough one today and it is disappointing and I feel it," she said afterwards.

"I did the game plan and controlled my emotions pretty well and there were just a few key moments that didn't go well."

Among the let-downs was the break at 4-2 in the first set.

"I didn't capitalise the break, I didn't hold my serve well, I played a sloppy game there," Erakovic said.

"Then in the tie breaker I took my foot off the pedal for a couple of points and she played really good."

A break point in the second was another key moment, Erakovic said, where a missed forehand cost her dearly.

"Looking back on it, it's just points and subtle differences. I am feeling down, but there's a lot of positives from today.

"It's tough when you haven't had confidence, when you haven't had a lot of wins."

The match was Erakovic's seventh main draw appearance at the French Open and her fourth first-round loss. Her best outcome was a third-round exit in 2013.

With Erakovic's departure from the singles, New Zealand's participation at Roland Garros will be limited to doubles play.

Artem Sitak and American partner Nicholas Monroe play Andres Molteni (Argentina) and Canadian Adin Shamasdin in the men's opening round, with Michael Venus and Ryan Harrison (US) up against Diego Schwartzman of Argentina and Francis Tiafoe (US).

Marcus Daniell and Brazilian partner Marcelo Demoline meet Tunisian Malen Jaziri and Italy's Andreas Seppi to round out the Kiwi component.
