The country's top-ranked female, ranked 105 in the world, was the third to last player to make the final 99 for Melbourne next month.

Erakovic recently played two WTA Challenger tournaments where she gained enough ranking points to qualify above Spain's Sara Sorribes Torno and Romania's Patricia Maria Tig, ranked 106th and 107th respectively.

The prize money at the Australian Open for the first round singles is $A38,500 ($NZ40,000).

Erakovic, 28, first played Melbourne in 2007 but has never got past the second round.

Three other New Zealanders are in the open; Michael Venus, Marcus Daniell and Artem Sitak will all compete in the men's doubles main draw.
