Erakovic starts Wimbledon qualifying

New Zealand tennis No.1 Marina Erakovic has drawn Brazilian Paula Cristina Goncalves in the opening round of qualifying for Wimbledon.

The 28-year-old Aucklander, who has been seeded 19th for the qualifying event, has a world ranking of 149, 26 places above her opponent.

The pair are due on court on Wednesday (NZ time).

Three wins are needed to make it through to the main draw.

Erakovic, who has a career-high ranking of 39, has twice reached the third round at Wimbledon.

Elsewhere in England, there were mixed results for New Zealanders involved in the men's doubles at the ATP tournament in Nottingham.

Artem Sitak and American Nicholas Monroe got past Italian pair Paolo Lorenzi and Andreas Seppi 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-1) in their opening-round encounter.

However, Michael Venus and Croatian partner Mate Pavic lost to third seeds Treat Huey (Philippines) and Max Mirnyi (Belarus) 7-5 6-3.
