Erakovic wins first Wimbledon qualifier

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 21/06/2016

New Zealand tennis No.1 Marina Erakovic has got past her first hurdle in qualifying for Wimbledon after downing Brazilian Paula Cristina Goncalves in straight sets.

The 28-year-old Aucklander, the world No.149, won 6-4 6-3 against an opponent ranked 27 places below her.

She will next face Poland's Urszula Radwanska on Thursday morning (NZT).

Radwanska, ranked 151, and Erakovic have met four times before, with each player winning twice.

One of those encounters was in the opening round at Wimbledon in 2012, when Erakovic won in straight sets.

Erakovic also prevailed, again in two sets, in the pair's most recent match, during qualifying for the WTA grass tournament at Mallorca last week.

Both of Radwanska's victories have been on hard court.

To get into the main draw at Wimbledon, players have to win three qualifying matches.
