Football Ferns captain Abby Erceg has made history by forming part of the title-winning campaign in the premier United States women's club competition.

Erceg's Western New York Flash beat Washington Spirit 3-2 in a penalty shootout to win the National Women's Soccer League final in Houston. The scores were locked 2-2 after regulation time and extra time.

The central defender is the first Kiwi to be part of a triumphant NWSL team, ending a memorable debut season with the club.

"What a great group of players, friends & people and what a way to finish a long season. We did it, we wrote the last line," she wrote on Twitter.

She has played more than 100 matches for the Football Ferns.
