Euro 2016: England fans warned after two nights of violence 11/06/2016

Nine fans were arrested during the second night of clashes in the southern city of Marseille, where Saturday's match will be played. Police said six of them would face charges.

Officers fired tear gas as drunk and bare-chested supporters clashed with each other and police in the Vieux Port district.

Local store owner Jean Patrick Berbera described how the port area was turned into a "civil war" zone, despite the police presence.

Nearby bars and restaurants were ordered to close, and local business owners vowed to implement extra security measures to avoid further damage to their properties.

England fan Gary Toal described a "mob mentality" on the streets but said most fans were "trying to keep away from all that and enjoy the football."

Heightened police presence

© Provided by Deutsche Welle Around 1,000 police officers have been deployed to Marseille during the month-long tournament, primarily to deal with an ongoing terror threat following the Paris attacks last November.

But with around 50,000 England fans and 20,000 Russians in the city, they are expected to have their work cut out.

French authorities have devised separate routes for England and Russia fans to enter the Stade Velodrome ahead of the 9 p.m. local time (19:00 UTC) kick off.

Marseille is determined to avoid a repeat of the violence during the 1998 World Cup when English hooligans clashed with Tunisia supporters.

Police in Britain warned England fans they would face travel bans to matches at home and abroad if they took part in violence.

Meanwhile, England coach Roy Hodgson urged fans to "avoid any troubles lurking around the corner."

UEFA repeated its appeal to supporters to behave, saying it is "confident that the safety of traveling fans will be ensured by the local authorities who are responsible for order in the city."
