Evans battles in Azerbaijan GP2

NZN 19/06/2016

New Zealand driver Mitch Evans struggled for pace in the latest round of the GP2 series in Azerbaijan, but still managed to finish fifth in race one before being forced out of a chaotic second race.

The 22-year-old Pertamina Campos Racing driver was running fourth in race two until an ill-managed safety car restart put an end to his sprint race on lap 12.

Evans said he had problems with pace at the inaugural event at Baku City Circuit, struggling to manage the slippery surface of the newly laid asphalt.

"We do have a lot of work to do, but I'm hoping the problems we've had with balance and tyre degradation this weekend are due to being at a brand new circuit and we'll be able to build on the positive steps we made in Monaco at the next rounds."

At last week's Monaco event, Evans finished fifth in the feature race and fourth in the sprint.

He currently sits 10th on the overall standings with 28 points after three events in the 11-meeting series.

The fourth meeting is scheduled for Spielberg in Austria on July 1.
