Evans fifth in Monaco GP2 feature race

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 27/05/2016

New Zealand driver Mitch Evans has finished fifth in a chaotic GP2 feature race at Monaco.

Evans, who started fourth on the grid, finished 11.723sec behind race winner Artem Markelov in the reduced 40-lap race around the tight 3.3km circuit through the streets of Monaco.

In a race peppered by crashes and yellow flags, Markelov (Russian Time) emerged on top, 1.541sec ahead of second-placed Frenchman Norman Nato (Racing Engineering).

British driver Oliver Rowland (MP Motorsport) was third, with compatriot Alex Lynn (DAMS) fourth.

Battling with the British pair, Evans paid the price for jumping the chicane at the exit of the tunnel with a five-second penalty, but was still satisfied with his placing.

"Salvaged 5th today. Struggled early on but managed to get some points on the board," he said on Twitter afterwards.

The 21-year-old Kiwi, driving for Spanish team Campos Racing, made a subdued start to the 11-race GP2 series in Barcelona two weeks ago, finishing 12th in the feature event and 14th in the shorter sprint race.

Last year, he produced seven podium finishes, including two race wins, for the Russian Time team.
