Evans off the pace in GP2 series opener

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 15/05/2016

New Zealand driver Mitch Evans was well off the pace in a subdued start to the GP2 series in Barcelona.

Evans, who has switched to Spanish team Campos Racing, followed up his 12th placing in Saturday's feature race with a 14th-placed drive in the shorter sprint race.

The 21-year-old failed to make inroads on the quicker cars in the 22-strong field and will need to improve to match his top-five overall placings in the last two seasons with the Russian Time team.

Last year Evans produced seven podium finishes, including two race wins.

Pierre Gasly is the early series leader after finishing second in both races. Fellow-Frenchman Norman Nato won the 37-lap feature before Briton Alex Lynn won the 26-lap sprint.
