Evans within sight of GP2 series lead

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 9/07/2016

New Zealand driver Mitch Evans has surged within two points of the lead in the GP2 series after a placing fourth in the feature race at Silverstone.

Evans, who qualified sixth-fastest, drove soundly to finish just over 20 seconds behind French winner Pierre Gasly, who beat his PREMA Racing team-mate Antonio Giovinazzi to the chequered flag.

Campos Racing driver Evans' performance over 29 laps at the British Grand Prix circuit lifted him to 70 championship points, level with Giovinazzi and just behind the 72 of new leader Gasly.

Italian Raffaele Marciello was leader through the first four legs of the 11-round series but he could only manage ninth on Saturday.

A 21-lap sprint race will be contested on Sunday.
