A former police officer can continue to keep his name secret after appearing in an Auckland court accused of using the force's database to access personal information about women.

The 34-year-old faces 21 counts of accessing a computer system for a dishonest purpose while employed as a police officer.

The charges resulted from a long-running investigation into the man's conduct during his time as a police officer, Auckland City Police District Commander Jill Roger said in January.

He appeared in Auckland District Court on Wednesday and was granted bail until his next appeance in April.
