A former Canterbury primary school principal has admitted sexually assaulting a boy in the 1990s.

Michael William Hogan appeared in Christchurch District Court on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to 10 historic charges - nine of sexual violation and one charge of indecency of a minor.

The 54-year-old was arrested in May following allegations he assaulted a boy aged under 16 in the South Island between 1990 and 1995.

He was the principal of a primary school near Christchurch until the end of last year but the charges do not relate to his time at the school.

Hogan was remanded in custody until sentencing on December 14.
