The New Zealand under-20s have named an experienced matchday squad to take on a combative Scottish outfit in the opening match of their World Championships tilt in Georgia on Wednesday night (NZT).

Led by Waikato-based loose forward Luke Jacobson, the Craig Philpott-coached side are expecting a physical battle and have stacked their ranks with strength and size.

Coming off a straightforward Oceania Championship victory, New Zealand are amongst the favourites for the tournament, which they last won in 2015 with the likes of Anton Lienert-Brown, Akira Ioane and Ofa Tu'ungafasi.

They finished fifth in last year's championships.

"We want to make a good start to the tournament - it's been the best part of three weeks since the Oceania Championships, so we want to get back up to where we were at that tournament in terms of our attack and defence," Philpott said.

"All 28 guys in our squad have earned the right to wear the black jersey, so there was a lot of discussion around our selection."

New Zealand will also play Italy and Ireland in their pool.
