Businesses in Wellington are struggling because of the earthquake and the wage subsidy scheme that covers the Kaikoura region should be extended to the capital, Labour says.

"With more Wellington buildings out of action, and cordons still in place in Molesworth St and around Courtney Central, it's now urgent that government steps up to support Wellington businesses as they have done elsewhere," said local Labour MP Grant Robertson.

"Some businesses are now having to look at laying off staff - even those with business protection insurance face unsustainable excess payments."

The Kaikoura support scheme, designed to help businesses retain staff, offers $500 a week wage subsidies for full-time employees and $300 a week for part-time workers for up to eight weeks.
