Extension needed for earthquake claims

Christchurch community groups have appealed to the Attorney-General to grant earthquake-affected locals more time to file claims.

Presently residents only have until September to file claims before the limitation period expires, but Empowered Christchurch and the South Brighton Residents' Association say people need more time.

"As the Earthquake Commission is only now settling many of the outstanding land claims, property owners have only a matter of months to obtain technical reports and file a claim," the groups say.

The land-damage claims should have been settled by the end of 2014, and as a result thousands of policyholders will be obligated to file proceedings before the cut-off date.

"This could lead to serious backlogs in the already overburdened District Court and High Court."

The group have written a letter to Attorney-General Christopher Finlayson QC for an extension to relieve pressure on people filing claims.
