Palmerston North police have stepped up patrols in the suburb of Roslyn after a dairy was violently robbed in the area.

Police say a group of six young men, possibly youths, entered the Rangiora Mini Mart at about 6pm on Monday armed with a baseball bat and fake guns.

The group then assaulted a shop assistant before getting away with cash and cigarettes.

Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan said the victim was receiving support and he would be talking to police on Tuesday.

Police would also be talking to a member of the public in the store at the time and would conduct extra patrols in the area, he said.

Officers will on Tuesday examine the scene and CCTV footage.

Fairfax reports the owner-operator of the dairy, Tinu Patel, said she still had nightmares about another armed robbery at the shop last December.
