A statement issued by the two families connected to the fatal shooting of Verity McLean in Invercargill on Tuesday has highlighted the support they are receiving from the community.

Ms McLean (nee Barber) was allegedly shot by her husband Ben, who has been arrested for murder. He also faces an attempted murder charge after a second victim, Garry Duggan, was injured.

Jane Allan, speaking on behalf of the Verity and Barber families, said they are trying to cope with the tragedy that had occurred.

"[We] would like to acknowledge the Invercargill community for their outpouring of support and compassion," she said.

"We have been overwhelmed by kindness and understanding, from family, friends and people within the community, some of whom we have never met."

Ms Allan said despite the media attention, it was important that the families had privacy in order to cope.
