Fears someone was trapped in a burning Invercargill house have been allayed after firefighters braved the flames and smoke to search for them.

Nearly two dozen firefighters were called to the house fire in Crinan Street just after midnight on Tuesday and were told there may be someone inside.

Crew with breathing gear managed to search two of the three rooms as the fire spread in the ceiling, says senior station officer Duane Shannon.

However, police were able to account for all family members.

With the house threatening to collapse it was extinguished from the outside.
