Family gets lost on Mt Pirongia

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 13/07/2016

A family of four have been rescued after getting lost in the dark on a Waikato mountain.

Police say the quartet - a 36-year-old mother and her three children aged seven, 10 and 15 - were not prepared or properly equipped when they set out for a walk near the summit of Mount Pirongia on Wednesday afternoon.

They called for help just before 9pm after being caught out in the dark when they underestimated how long the walk would take them.

Searchers managed to find them at about 3am on Thursday - cold and tired but otherwise healthy - and they were being walked out by rescue teams.
