There will be a large search of the Sabys Road area in Halswell this weekend as police continue to look for missing man Michael Craig McGrath in Christchurch.

Mr McGrath, 49, was last seen at his home in Checketts Ave in Halswell on May 21.

On Friday his brother Simon McGrath issued an appeal for help, reiterating it was out of character for the builder not to have been in touch with his family.

"His family and friends are desperate to get him home and we are making this plea for any sightings of activity.

"It might appear trivial but it might be the piece of the puzzle we need to solve this mystery," Simon McGrath said.

Detective Inspector Darryl Sweeney says police are particularly interested in information and sightings of the missing man on the three days from May 21.

He released a picture of Mr McGrath's bike and says he may have gone for a ride on it. The Sunday was an overcast day to start with and then became sunny.

"Did you see Michael on his blue mountain bike?" Det Insp Sweeney asked.

He would not comment on a property police have been searching belonging to a person of interest.

Police had spoke to a spoken to a number of people of interest and would continue to do so during the next few days, he said.

"At the moment this is a missing person inquiry," he said.

Det Insp Sweeney says Mr McGrath is a hard working and reliable man.

"The longer this goes on the more concerned we become."

Search and rescue teams comprising police and volunteers will search the Sabys Road area from mid-morning on Saturday.

Det Insp Sweeney says it will be a large search.
