Faster treatment for cataract patients

A new assessment system for people with cataracts is now operating nationwide and will ensure those most in need get priority treatment, Health Minister Jonathan Coleman says.

The online system doctors use to assess patients and then send them for surgery if they need it was trialled last year and is now being used across the country.

"Cataract surgery is one of the most straightforward elective surgery procedures performed by our hospitals, but it is also one where the benefits to the patient can be significant within a fairly short time," Dr Coleman said on Thursday.

"The answer to increased demand is to do more."

Latest figures show there were 16,439 cataract operations in the 2015/16 financial year compared with 13,205 in 2008/09.
