The Queen's Birthday holiday weekend is off to a horror start on the roads with a fatal four-car pile-up near Dunedin and a pregnant woman injured in a crash in Northland.

A man is dead and four others have serious injuries after a crash on State Highway 1 between Waikouaiti and Waitati shortly before 6pm on Friday, police say.

The injured people have been taken to Dunedin Hospital.

At the other end of the country a pregnant woman and a man were seriously injured in a two-car crash north of Kaiwaka about an hour later.

The woman was airlifted to Whangarei Hospital and the man was taken by ambulance.

Last year five people were killed and 28 seriously injured in 96 crashes during the Queen's Birthday holiday weekend, with more than half of fatal crashes on the open road.

The highest toll was 24 in 1973.

The official holiday period road toll started at 4pm on Friday and runs until 6am on Tuesday.
